The BRC locomotive fleet has grown with the addition of new ECO locomotives. Known as 230 locomotives, they now include locomotive 230 to 237.

Electro-Motive Diesel completely refurbishes “core” locomotives, from removing any rust holes to replacing the existing engines with Eco ones. The process takes 90 to 120 days to complete and the locomotives come with a one-year warranty.

Todd Ruddy, general foreman/RCL tech, said the new locomotives come with numerous benefits.

“The cost savings in fuel is one,” he said. “They also run cooler so you have better emissions.”

The efficient and environmentally friendly locomotives require additional training for mechanics. EMD offered two classes for BRC mechanics to learn the new system.

The 230 locomotives start as “core” locomotives, which are refurbished into more economically and environmentally favorable units.
