BRC is focused on ways to prepare for industry changes as a result of positive train control implementation. A PTC-enabled train has antennae and electrical components that provide information about its location and where it can travel safely. Equipment on the train prevents unsafe movements.

PTC has four main purposes including preventing the train from exceeding the speed limit, passing a stop signal, running through a misaligned main track switch and entering into a roadway worker zone.

The U.S. Congress passed a 2008 bill requiring the implementation of PTC technology on most U.S. railroad lines by Dec. 31, 2015. However, complete installation of this technology is not expected before 2019.
