Employees wear pink for good cause

Superintendent of Mechanical Adam Brock and Chief Clerk Brandy Lindquist recently teamed up and found a unique way for employees to show their support for Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October by acquiring pink hard hats and related stickers.

“We’ve had excellent participation from all departments and look forward to doing this every year,” Brock said. “I’m proud of our team as they represent what the BRC truly stands for, supporting each other and the community.”

Even more support

Manager of Human Resources and Labor Relations Caitlin Kerney recently helped organize BRC Goes Pink on Oct. 27, which encouraged employees to wear brightly colored attire in support of breast cancer awareness and research. Managers also donned T-shirts with the slogan “Real Railroaders Wear Pink.”

Donations for the Susan G. Komen Cancer Research Foundation can still be made until the end of the year.

“It’s an excellent cause, and we wanted to support our community’s general health and well-being,” Kerney said. “It’s important to raise awareness.”

Why is wearing a pink hard hat important?

My sister, Sylvia Torres-Lopez, died of breast cancer. She was 43 and had four children. I᾿m wearing my pink hard hat to honor her.

A dollar could fund critical research, patient care, community health programs and public policy and advocacy for more than 3.8 million breast cancer survivors, an estimated 168,000 people living with metastatic disease and the scientists, health care professionals, caregivers and members of the public who are concerned about breast cancer. For ever employee that wears pink, the Belt will donate to the Susan G. Komen Cancer Research Foundation up to a grand total of $2,500!
