Account Clerk Raquel Bernal’s 20-plus years at the Belt are marked with consistency.

“Raquel brings a strong work ethic every day,” said Accounting Manager Robert Porter. “Her commitment, attention to detail and willingness to step up make a meaningful difference across the team.”

Bernal started as a chief clerk in car operations and later transitioned into accounting, where her responsibilities now include accounts payable and receivable and some payroll duties. 

Prior to joining the Belt, she worked in accounting roles for a property manager and an architectural firm. She also was an office manager. 

Bernal says she’s grateful for the knowledge and guidance she’s received throughout her railroad career, noting several former co-workers “paved the way” with their insights.

She also credits Chief Financial Officer Archie Listenbee for leading an effort to modernize their department and their accounting tools.

“He’s simplified our job,” she said.

Colleagues describe Bernal as a reliable team player who doesn’t hesitate to assist others. She said that mindset was influenced by her father, Miguel, stating, “My dad was always a hard worker.”

Outside of work, Bernal and her spouse, Daniel Leyva, enjoy spending time with their granddaughter, Luna Jane, and adult daughters, Amanda Nicole, a child therapist, and Jessica Victoria, a biologist. Both daughters are currently pursuing master’s degrees.

“It’s exciting to see my daughter Amanda become a mother and know this tiny infant came from my child,” Bernal said.

As part of family time, Bernal says they enjoy biking, hiking and reading, which has become a friendly competition. Amanda read 152 books in 2025 during her pregnancy, pacing the field.

Travel is another shared priority as Bernal and her loved ones look forward to taking an annual cruise, biannual visits to Disney Parks and a biennial trip internationally.
