Family Day reflects unity

For the second consecutive year, employees were able to enjoy Family Day as the June 17 event included fun for all ages.

“We already have a strong community, including our extended BRC family, such as local first responders, and Family Day helps us make that even stronger,” said President and General Manager Percy Fields. “It was good to see everyone enjoy themselves. Our people have a lot of pride, and that was on display.”

As for the food and activities, Roadmaster Jeff Mateyack cooked burgers on a locomotive-shaped grill, and Director of Information Technology Bob Whitlock served up fresh-squeezed lemonade.

Numerous leadership team members also were cooled off by youngsters at the dunk tank while attendees enjoyed games, face painting and bounce houses.

The Chicago Police Department also stopped by with its Pipes and Drums Band along with its Mounted Patrol and K-9 units. The Bedford Park Fire Department brought a fire engine.

Locomotives and Engineering equipment were on display too, allowing employees’ families to get an up-close and personal look at the tools of their trades.

“It was a cool opportunity for the kids to experience the railroad for themselves,” Superintendent of Mechanical Adam Brock said.

Fields thanked the numerous craft professionals and leadership members who put on the event. Diesel Shop Manager Pat McCarron said he was grateful to participate, adding, “An event like this shows the unity of our company.”
