Belt Junction, a crucial interlocking with a high volume of Metra traffic, was upgraded with new programmable logical controllers (PLCs) that can be adjusted online. The previous versions required hardware changes.

A cantilever, gate and signal bungalow are being added to the 73rd Street crossing, which is part of an industry track.

Chief Engineer Scott Schiemann said the active warning and control devices will enhance safety for train crews and the general public in the busy commercial area.
