The Belt participated in See Tracks? Think Train Week in September, which was formerly known as Rail Safety Week.
On Sept. 26, Signal Foreman/Trainer Clint Jonas helped students from Mariano Azuela Elementary School stencil a safety message on a sidewalk near a highway-rail grade crossing. He provided them with smocks and PPE.
“I gave them a quick course in how to use spray paint and helped them pick a spot,” Jonas said. “It was really cool. Children use that sidewalk every day, so it’s good for them to see the message.”
There also was a safety blitz in which Belt employees engaged the public at a nearby stoplight and grade crossing.
“It was a big event,” Jonas said, noting how local law enforcement agents, FRA personnel and the media were in attendance.
Digital Media Coordinator Joe Chacon and Manager of Human Resources and Labor Relations Caitlin Kerney helped organize the event, which was attended by Superintendent Safety Terry Hartwig.
Chacon and Jonas later gave three Operation Lifesaver presentations, reaching 700 students with their safety message.
“It was a good opportunity,” Chacon said.
