Safety-first approach pays off

Transportation employees have surpassed 600 days without a reportable injury.

“Our employees are buying into safety and taking a safety-first approach in everything they do,” Superintendent Terry Hartwig said. “They all look out for one another. We have a very strong safety culture, and these folks care.”

He believes the tight-knit nature of the Belt — with all its personnel, including leadership, working in close proximity — aids their efforts.

Lauding General Manager Percy Fields’ contributions to employee safety, Hartwig said Fields recently led a “deep-dive” effort to search for any trends within the past 10 years of the company’s incident and injury reports.

“It helps us be proactive instead of reactive,” Hartwig said.
