Sign replacement reveals Belt history

The Belt’s multilayered approach to safety apparently applies to its Central Avenue entrance sign as well.

With a new “Pulling Together for Safety” sign in place, employees began to disassemble the previous version, revealing two hidden treasures: a placard featuring signatures of “The Best Railroaders of Chicago” and one that illustrates how “Safety Comes in Cans.”

While the latter sign now has a new place of honor in the yard, the signed piece is being saved for posterity and the original “Pulling Together” sign, which honors the Belt’s six owner railroads, will be on display in the Illinois Railway Museum’s main entryway.
