Tim Coffey, general counsel, secretary and director human resources, spoke at the American Shortline and Regional Railroad Association General Counsel Symposium in Kansas City, Missouri, in October.

His presentation, “Hiring & Pre-Employment: The Top 10 Dos and Don’ts,” covered the legal and practical aspects of current pre-employment and hiring issues.

Coffey focused on the laws that apply to this aspect of his duties. He suggested to his peers proper ways to ask questions during the interviewing process.

“There is a lot of hiring going on in the rail industry,”  Coffey said. “Finding the best people for our vast variety of jobs is often more of an art than a science.”
