Bridge replacement start of new approach

Engineering completed a replacement of Bridge 410 in January.

B&B, Track and Communications were involved in the project.

The single-track bridge is part of the South Chicago District lead and traverses 96th Street near Baltimore Avenue in the shadow of the Chicago Skyway.

Engineer of Bridges and Special Projects Scott Schiemann notes that much of the BRC system is more than 100 years old. He said replacing Bridge 410 was the start of implementing a new plan to replace bridges instead of repairing them.

The Bridge 410 project was completed in less than a year, including the design and bid process. The process generally takes significantly longer.

Track was responsible for installing a new track panel during the project.

“It was a smooth project and all of Engineering worked to get it done,” Schiemann said.
