Safety Manager Alexander Gibson is focused on standardization, workplace culture and field-driven decision-making in his newly created role.
Gibson joined the Belt on Feb. 16 after serving as CPKC’s director of mechanical. He began his railroad career with CSX in 1995 and has performed a range of responsibilities, including conductor, locomotive engineer, assistant trainmaster, trainmaster, assistant superintendent, general and senior car foreman, and manager of locomotive operations.
“Starting with my boots on the ground, each role helped me build a foundation for leadership,” Gibson said. “It showed me what the railroad looks like and taught me how to work safely and be productive.”
His current assignment is centered on developing and reinforcing operating rules, regulations and procedures while promoting standardization efforts, including personal protective equipment (PPE). Gibson says he’s also working with new leaders in a mentorship capacity.
Gibson is focused on creating clear processes that support safety, productivity and continuous improvement while strengthening alignment across the workforce.
This effort involves engaging craft professionals directly to identify and adopt best practices. He said the Belt’s structure allows for direct communication across departments, which helps improve efficiency and decision-making.
“At the end of the day we want to work safely and be productive,” Gibson said.
Gibson was born in Montreal and has lived in several states, including Arizona, California, Missouri, New York, North Carolina and Ohio, as his father worked in aluminum extrusion, and the family frequently relocated.
Gibson says he learned the importance of accountability, continous improvement, hard work and career development from his father.
In addition to railroading, Gibson served four years in the U.S. Navy as an operations specialist second class. He said the military structure helped him develop leadership and coaching skills, stating, “It set me up for success.”
It also gave him the opportunity to see different parts of the world, with Singapore standing out as a favorite.
Listing family as his greatest achievement, Gibson and his wife, Kelly, have three daughters: Lexi, Mia and Reese.
Gibson credited his wife and daughters for providing support throughout multiple relocations and career changes.
As for his pastimes, Gibson remains active in soccer. He plays in three competitive leagues and coaches, which he did for his daughters’ teams as well.
“Railroading is a team sport too; it takes everyone pulling in the same direction,” he said.
