Mateyack advocates safety

Along with his work as a B&B lead carpenter, Jeffrey Mateyack serves on the Belt Railway Safety Committee. Two and a half years ago, he accepted the invitation to attend a safety meeting. After a few meetings, he decided to join.

“They started asking me to get more involved and talk with the employees,” he said. “It’s about practicing what I preach.”

His involvement on the committee stemmed from his interest in potentially saving someone from making a mistake later. He appreciates what he learns in meetings because he can share it with his co-workers.

Mateyack joined the railroad six years ago. He likes the mobility of his job, making repairs and the relationships he has built with co-workers.

“You are never in the same spot too long,” he said. “Every day is different.”

Mateyack works safely for his wife, Kailey, and their children, Matthew, 6, and Ava, 2. He can attend his son’s sporting events in hockey, soccer and baseball and was able to coach his T-ball team last year.

“I foresee myself staying with the Belt for the remainder of my career,” he said. “I like it and look forward to the opportunities it will afford me.”
