Drawn to the awe-inspiring power of the locomotives he saw passing through his territory as a 26-year Berwyn police officer, Ramon Ortiz joined Belt Railway’s police force Nov. 16.

“We have several railroads go through Berwyn, and I would see the engines pass,” he said. “It just draws you. They have so much power. They’re such a part of this nation’s history, and the way they operate is fascinating.”

Since starting, Ortiz has adjusted from municipal to company work. It’s a much different arena, but everyone is eager to help if he has any questions. He appreciates how safety conscious employees are and how willing they are to help.

“Everybody has been warm and welcoming,” he said. “Companywide, they are great to work with.”

Ortiz looks forward to assisting employees and protecting railroad assets. The more he learns about the industry, the more interesting it becomes.   

“Thank you to everybody at the Belt,” he said. “Thank you to the company for the opportunity to work here. I have found a home here after leaving a place where I have worked so long. Any doubt I had about the transition was quickly put to rest after the first few days at the Belt.”

Outside of work, Ortiz enjoys traveling with his wife, Kris. The couple have children, Philip, 25, and Savana,12.
