Reminiscent of the 1980’s TV series, 37-year-railroader Artemio Santoyo and his family earned the nickname “A-Team” because of their names: Artemio; his wife, Aida; and children, Aaron, Adrina, Andrea and Araceli.

Artemio and Aaron work for BRC as track welders.

“This is a good job with good pay and good benefits,” Artemio said. “I try to keep it and work safely.”

Santoyo, who has worked his career without a reportable injury, said the key to working safely is being alert and aware of one’s surroundings. He also says it means ensuring jobs are done correctly.

Of all his tasks, he most enjoys thermite welds. He attended a two-week college course in Kansas City to learn the craft. He always is willing to share his years of experience with others.

“I never thought I would be working with my dad one day,” Aaron said. “It’s been a good experience. He taught me a lot of things about the railroad and welding. He is a good teacher.”

Track Foreman Mike Martinez agreed.

“I have learned a lot from him,” he said. “He has a lot of knowledge and is smart.”
