The wheel beds on the Martin Building’s west end are now more than double their original size.
As they were extended by 17 feet, the larger beds can now hold 11 wheel sets each. This will enable the Belt to keep more stock on hand and stay ahead of its needs, which will reduce the burden on vendors and boost efficiency.
By reducing steps employees have to take to reach wheels, and thus exposure, it’s also considered a safety enhancement. The racks also are positioned to facilitate easier wheel deliveries.
Car Foreman Chris Chladek oversaw the project, which was completed in a week. The Engineering Department provided the ties and rail for the job.
