Belt engages community through Operation Lifesaver

Digital Media Coordinator Joe Chacon said the Belt continues to expand its safety outreach through Operation Lifesaver events across the city, partnering with local and federal agencies to engage the public at busy crossings and transit hubs.

A Feb. 11 safety blitz brought together the Chicago Police Department (CPD), the FRA and Belt employees at 67th Street near Mariano Azuela Elementary School. Chacon said the event was near a highway-rail grade crossing with regular pedestrian and vehicle traffic, underscoring the importance of direct community engagement.

He said the Belt built on that effort with another safety blitz on March 31 at three locations: Central Avenue near Archer Avenue, 59th Street near Midway International Airport and the Midway Transit Center at 59th Street. The event included representatives from the Belt, CPD and Chicago Transit Authority (CTA).

Chacon said the coordinated approach allows the Belt to reach a wider audience while reinforcing consistent safety messaging. He added that working alongside partner agencies strengthens visibility and highlights the shared responsibility of keeping crossings and rail-adjacent areas safe.
