Belt helps area schoolchildren

Representing the Belt, Switchman Joe Chacon and Manager of Human Resources and Labor Relations Caitlin Kerney recently helped bring smiles to children’s faces by distributing railroad swag at Kennedy High School as part of Garfield Ridge Chamber of Commerce’s 3rd Annual Backpack Giveaway and Back 2 School Fun event.

The Belt donated $2,500 to sponsor the event, which gives school supplies to local children.

Director of Police & Risk Management Gerald Conoboy said it’s important to support the community and remind residents how the Belt is more than just the company that makes the gates go down at their local crossing.

“This is a way to have our name associated with a good cause,” he said.

Some of the swag, such as coloring books, also had an important rail safety message, which appealed to Chacon, an Operation Lifesaver volunteer who has given presentations to many neighborhood children.

“It was a great turnout and a lot of fun,” he said. “It was nice to see familiar faces and see people enjoying themselves.”

Sgt. Excell Calhoun also supported the event.
