Understanding train movements — and anticipating what comes next — is central to Locomotive Engineer Will Farrell’s role at the Belt.

Farrell, a five-year team member, recently made the transition from switchman to locomotive engineer after completing a five-month process that included classroom instruction and on-the-job training with Locomotive Engineer Mike Holic. He notes he appreciates Holic for sharing his knowledge.

Farrell, a Tinley Park native, brings 15 years of experience to the role as he previously worked as a Union Pacific conductor at Proviso Yard in Melrose Park, Illinois.

As he’s now part of engine service, Farrell says every train he operates handles differently. 

“You can feel the whole train and what it’s doing,” he said, noting he must constantly account for momentum and in-train forces while staying aware of his surroundings.

The latter is especially important for Farrell’s conductor, which is why he places a strong emphasis on communication, rules adherence and thorough job briefings.

Outside of work, Farrell enjoys time with his wife, Erica, and their five children, who range in age from 3 to 15. Farrell also likes fishing at local ponds.
