Signal Maintainer Hump Technician Gerardo Caballero is building a foundation for a long-term career at the Belt, combining hands-on training with a willingness to learn.

Caballero, who joined the Belt in June 2025, will soon head for his second of three two-week sessions at Signal Training Solutions in Grain Valley, Missouri.

“It’s a great program as we work with maintainers from all across the country,” he said.

Caballero previously studied political science, psychology and forensic science at Monmouth College, graduating in 2024 with the intention of pursuing a law career. He recently decided to move in a different direction.

“I had no knowledge of railroading, but it’s the best choice I’ve made,” he said.

Noting the support and knowledge transfer he’s received from co-workers, Caballero views the department as welcoming and collaborative.

Prior to joining the Belt, he worked at Home Depot repairing tools, where he developed mechanical skills that have carried over into his current role. At 23, he sees long-term potential at the Belt and appreciates the consistent positive feedback he’s received from his seasoned teammates.

Outside of work, Caballero remains active in baseball, a sport played in high school, college and throughout his youth. His positions included catcher and third baseman. Caballero still competes in two men’s leagues and coaches at a local high school, noting his approach to baseball mirrors his outlook on work.

“Every day, I strive to give 110%,” he said.
